MERAKI

The Kefalonian Think Tank

Preparing the future

Meraki (μεράκι) is a Greek word with no direct English equivalent. It describes doing something with soul, creativity and love, putting a piece of yourself into your work. It is the right name for an organisation that thinks deeply about Kefalonia's future and acts on that thinking with genuine care for the island and its people.

  1. 01 · INSTITUTIONAL

Ideas and governance to set our own direction

Meraki aims to bring together experts, intellectuals and specialists to study and propose evolutions in the governance of Kefalonia, and carries this work to local, regional and national decision-makers, elected officials and civil servants alike.

    In practice

    • Commissioning studies and reports on Kefalonia's governance, economy and institutions.
    • Presenting findings publicly through media, intermediary bodies, elected officials and administrations.
    • Advocating for greater economic, political and fiscal autonomy for Kefalonia within the Hellenic Republic.
  2. 02 · PHILANTHROPIC

Giving back for the generations to come

Meraki funds and runs direct-action initiatives on the ground. For the 2026-2028 plan, three causes are central.

    • Since 2026

Supporting the work of the Kefalonian orphanage

We contribute €8,000 over 2026-2028 to food, school supplies and IT classes, alongside the orphanage's other donors. The staff do remarkable work every day, and we are glad to support it. Our hope is simple: that every child grows up safe, is given good values, does well at school and leaves with skills that open doors.

    • Since 2026

      Providing firefighters and civil-safety volunteers

Equipment donations and public awareness campaigns for those who protect the island. Through the fire season they work long days, often at personal risk, so that our houses, businesses and fields can be kept.

    • From 2027

Finding and implementing a permanent solution for the Ainos wild horses

A fund, starting in 2027, to study and protect the wild Ainos horses and to find a lasting solution that makes them an active part of Kefalonia's agricultural and tourist fabric.

  3. 03 · ENTREPRENEURSHIP

    Training the next generation

Meraki runs one or two entrepreneurship support sessions a year in Greece. The aims are to keep talent in Greece, helping young Greeks create their own jobs and businesses, ideally on Kefalonia, and to build a network of future partners and associates for Kefalonia World's projects.
